A Day of Documentaries & Nostalgia

We had a "team meeting" for VISTA today which was actually really interesting. We watched a documentary about health disparities that was very thought-provoking and made me realize the extent to which health disparities are caused by poverty and disparity in income and all of the things that come along with that. I was surprised that health outcomes (and life expectancy) correlated so strongly and on a gradient with income level. Very interesting. I also appreciated the attitude the film took that this is something we can actually DO something about through policy changes--zoning for particular businesses and mixed income housing, providing health care to all, education, etc.

I came home and made some cookies, half of which my roommate thankfully took to our downstairs neighbors. I like making them, but I eat them way too quickly...

I decided not to go out--I just felt like hanging out and watching a movie or two...so I indulged in the fabulous Netflix service of instant watching and found a film called "The Business of Being Born" that discusses midwifery and hospitals and birthing practices in the US. Also very interesting. My roommate (back from Geneva) joined me and then I showed her "That Thing You Do," a movie I remember nostalgically from elementary school, and whose songs I can still sing nearly every word of.

I also found out that I will most likely be able to begin work on Monday or Tuesday, which is extremely exciting--I'm nervous but really really cannot wait to be doing something. Anything, really. As for now....going to sleep.
